Will AI replace people?

There has been a lot of talk about Digital Spedition recently. The digital transformation is changing the whole transport industry, simplifying processes, creating new services and products, and making everyday work easier.

The analysis of data over the next few years will bring business benefits for transport companies in the form of lower costs, better flow of cargo, streamlining of processes and optimization of transport volume, which may reduce the demand for vehicles. Modern systems that enter our market give the possibility not only to track the cargo in real time, but also to quickly circulate documents and short payment terms.

However, every rose has its thorn. It turns out that with modern systems there are also potential threats to the forwarding company and the forwarding agent.

In the process of refrigerated transport – which is one of the most sensitive types of transport due to the food products being carried (they affect both health and life of the recipients), it is impossible to eliminate people with their knowledge and experience at the moment. Controlled temperature transports must provide products for consumption in a safe condition for people. It is important that they’re carried out in accordance with the regulations, the observance of which is to ensure the transport of food is done without damage.

Throughout the whole movement process it is advisable that all parties involved share information that is important to the other participants. From the point of view of the freight forwarder organizing the transport, the most common problems encountered are: non-flexible delivery times, deliveries that do not match with the agreed schedule or do not conform to the order, the risk of returns due to quality, change of place of unloading and lack of proper awareness of the drivers about the transported products.

The proper execution of the whole transport is already affected by the preparation of the goods: the right temperature of the product, packaging according to food packaging standards and a trailer, properly prepared loading. Of course, it is necessary to have an experienced driver who will check the temperature of the products and the correct preparation of the goods. It also can’t be done without a forwarder with appropriate knowledge, who watches over all the details.

In the course of transport, the driver, with the use of modern equipment, controls the course of transport, and in case of emergency, informs the forwarder about the potential risks. Then they work together to solve the problem. Taking into account the fact that products sensitive to temperature changes are transported and burdened with a high risk of returns due to their quality, every minute counts.

At the last stage, there might be some obstacles too, i.e. change of the place of delivery or refusal to accept the goods due to their poor quality. In this case the driver and the forwarder must work together.

The role of a forwarding agent is very important in the whole process of streamlining the flow of transportation and contributes to minimizing costs and losses in the whole process. A forwarder is in a way an integrating element, that connects the forwarding process using modern systems.

New technologies and systems will make the work easier and faster, but they will not replace people. Let us remember that forwarding activity is not only the organization of transport service, and a forwarder takes care not only of the realization of orders, but also of good relations with the client and contact with the carrier.
